Frustrations and Blessings

I mentioned briefly in an earlier post that I was going to start taking customer service calls from home. I had to get a home phone and a separate DSL connection installed in the bedroom where I am going to be working - this was all set up to be installed yesterday morning between 10-12. Late Sunday evening, I realized I had forgotten to purchase a home phone and a headset!! After Greg left for work yesterday morning, I went ahead and made a quick trip up to Wal-Mart (at 6:30 am) to try and pick up a phone and a headset so I could get back home and straighten up my desk area before the cable guy got there to work on my DSL/phone connection.

I had just gotten back to the house at 8:00 when the guy called me and asked if he could come over early...as in right now. This actually worked out great for me! He came over, did what he had to do and was gone by 9:00. Whoohoooo - I was ready to begin my training. I had plugged the phone in to let it begin charging and decided to let it charge until 11:00 before I started working. I didn't think I would really need my phone the first day but I wasn't sure so I didn't want to take any chances.

11:00....pulled out my nifty new headset...sat down in front of the computer to begin my training...went to hook up my headset to my phone and there was no way to connect it to my phone! GRRRRRR, are you kidding me?? By this time, my mom had left for the day taking with her her vehicle (my source of transportation when Greg is at work) so I had no way of running back out to Wal-Mart until later that evening.

I spent the day cleaning and dusting my frustrations away until 6:30 that night when I made ANOTHER trip back to Wal-Mart to return that phone. After looking at all the other phones available and opening several boxes and inspecting the actual unit to see if there was a spot to put a headpiece I left there headed to Kmart. I was determined to find a simple $20.00 phone that could connect to a headpiece. There were plenty if I was willing to pay $60.00 + (which I'm not because I won't ever use the thing and don't need all the bells and whistles.) I had to go to 4 stores - fortunately they are within 2 miles of each other down a main highway - before I found a phone at Target on sale for $19.96....it was just perfect!!

While I was there I was able to pick up two more packs of these Huggie Cleanteams using my coupon found here. Target has had these on sale for several weeks now for $1.99/each and with my coupon $3.00/2, I end up paying $.50 each for these!
On my way home I called to find out if we needed milk and when I was told that we were almost out I let them know I was going to run into CVS to purchase some milk. Gotta get my CVS fix in for the day!! This is what I picked up for $4.61 out of my pocket! Whooohooo - the milk alone was $3.99 so all this other stuff was pretty much pocket change AND I got $5 ECB back for the razor.

Progress Report - April 2008

I use Microsoft Money to keep up with our household budget and keep track of our monthly income and expenses. I love this program because I can break down every category and see exactly where our money has gone (bills, household expenses, gifts, personal items, food, etc.)

I sub-divide those categories into even smaller categories so I can get a more thorough picture.
For example:
FOOD - I have these subcategories

• Groceries
• Dining Out
• Tips for waitress (it's very interesting to see exactly how much money we give to waiters/waitresses each month!)
  

PERSONAL ITEMS

• Cologne/Perfume
• Deodorants
• Toothcare
• Haircare Supplies
• Face Cleansers/Body Wash
  
• Razors

It is very easy to enter my receipts in to my program at the beginning or end of each day - takes about 5-10 minutes and this helps me track exactly how much we are spending on what and look for areas to cut back on.

During April, I didn't do too well with my goals for the month. Several reasons for this....
1) Greg didn't receive any bonuses during this month and I didn't receive child support for a couple of the weeks so we were several hundred dollars short this month. But, praise God, I did get to work for a friend one week while she was out of town so I actually brought in a paycheck a little over $300 - that made up a little bit of the difference of what we were lacking.

2) Greg had to travel out of town on business and was gone for a week; with us both working for one week; lots of activities during the month - we ate out entirely too much!

Here were my goals for April and how I plan to do better for May-

• Cook more meals at home - didn't do this - actually did worse at this last month due to the reasons I stated in #2 above. We did spend less on food in April than we did in March (by $7.00! LOL) but we were still in the $600 range. I am going to start planning Weekly Menus to help me in this area. I used to do this but got away from it because...well, because it requires work and frankly I got tired of doing it. But if I want to get my food expenses down then I realize I am going to have to WORK at it a little bit harder!
• No money towards the Emergency Fund this month - too short on cash! BUT, praise GOD! I applied for a customer service job (working from home) back in January and I found out last week that I was hired!! So, I start training tomorrow - this will boost our Emergency Fund quickly over the next month!
• I did pay another $100.00 towards our credit card. I am aiming to pay $500 towards that credit card this month.

Since I've done my end-of-April report and can see where our money went I have found several areas I'm going to work on "tweaking" this month. With my new work-from-home job and Greg's anticipated bonus this month I am hoping to make a dent in that credit card and get most of our Emergency Fund funded.

Sunday Thought

Been reading through Philippians this last week and this morning's verses were so appropriate for what I've been dealing with the last few days...

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is love, whatever is admirable - if anything is excellent or praiseworthy - think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me - put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you." Philippians 4:6-9

Relay For Life 2008

Our theme was "Three Little Pigs - Don't Let Cancer Blow You Away..."
The festivities began at 6 pm with the survivor laps. We didn't make it there until about 6:45. Everything was in full swing by then.

More of our decorations. Normally me and Sammy (CJ's husband) are racing around trying to get the tent decorated and set up while CJ finishes up working before heading out to the Relay later in the afternoon. This year though Sammy had other obligations to worry about so he was way ahead of things -- he and their daughters made up all these decorations a few weeks ago. I didn't do anything to help decorate this year. They did an awesome job!
Debbie, CJ and I standing under our tent. Debbie and I had walked several laps already. CJ was so tired last night. She is taking next week off to spend with her family before she has her surgery week after next to remove the new tumor that has appeared. It was a sad night last night knowing she is about to go through this all over again.
CJ and her beautiful family. Her daughters, Chelsea and Cassidy and her son - Caleb. They adopted Caleb in November 2006. He is a precious boy!
This was about midnight. We were waiting for a certain event to be over so we could leave. CJ and Caleb were exhausted by this time. She could barely stay awake and Caleb finally gave it up. There were so many people that came out to support our team last night - more than we have had in the past. Word has gotten out the last 2 days about CJ's health problems and people wanted to come show their support.

Update on my dear friend

Found out yesterday it looks like another surgery and 3 rounds of chemo is in the very near future. She is taking off work next week to spend time with her family before all the craziness of chemo begins again. She truly amazes me. She found out about this right before going to church Wednesday night for choir practice and after all she has been through she still sits there and worships God and sings praises to Him during choir practice...it was only after an hour and a half of practice that she finally bothered to mention her "little problem" during prayer requests.

Cancer rearing its ugly head AGAIN

I've posted several times about my best friend, CJ, and her battle (and victory) with ovarian cancer. We are participating in our local Relay for Life event this Friday/Saturday in honor of CJ - this is our 6th year doing this. The last couple of months CJ hasn't been feeling well and has been going through so many tests. Her testing started the day she and I went on our road trip to Ocala. Yesterday she finally found out the results of those tests - there is a mass on her stomach and she has to go through chemo/radiation again. I can't imagine what my dear sweet friend is feeling right now. I know she is trying to be brave and tell everyone to pray for God's will to be done in this situation but I know inside she has to be so scared of going through the ravaging effects of the chemo all over again...especially now that she knows what to expect. Please keep my friend in your prayers as we go through this next season in her life.

Tortured for Christ

I received this book FREE a little while back because I get the Voice of the Martyrs monthly newsletter and this was something they were offering. I've just begun to read it this last week. It is an awesome book!

This tells the story of Richard Wurmbrand, the founder of The Voice of the Martyrs. Here is what it says on the back of the book:
Months of solitary confinement, years of periodic physical torture, constant suffering from hunger and cold, the anguish of brainwashing and mental cruelty - these are the experiences of a Romanian pastor during his fourteen years in Communist prisons.

Organization

I've realized over the years some people have the "organization" gene and some people don't. God blessed me and my daughters with this gene - my mother and grandmother were not so blessed. They live in piles of clutter (paperwork and things) simply because they don't know what to do with them or how to organize them.


This is what has worked for me in organizing these 3 areas that tend to be "messy" areas:

In the Bathroom - I don't have shelves, only under the sink storage space so I have purchased 2 of those 3-drawer plastic rubbermaid type storage units to fit under there. In each drawer there is something different (soap, lotions, first aid stuff, makeup, hair supplies, etc). Between those units and a couple of baskets for cleaning supplies everything has its place and everyone knows where the stuff is.

In my son's room - He has 3 large under-the-bed storage containers with wheels that he keeps his bigger toys/systems in and he can just roll it in and out when he wants to get to them. He has plenty of shelves in his room and we have baskets to hold small toys/balls in or else I have some more of those plastic 3 & 4-drawer type storage units on his shelves. I let him choose what goes in which drawer and then we label the drawers with clear labels and Sharpie so he knows right where everything is supposed to go when it is clean-up time.

Paperwork/Office - If I didn't have a system set up for this it would get out of hand so quick! As soon as I get the mail in every single day (this is where I have noticed people have struggles) I open all the mail and go through it that day and sort it into its appropriate place. Junk mail/flyers go in the trash obviously; magazines go in the bathroom magazine rack (because that's where everybody reads the most around here!); bills go in a file folder I have set up next to my computer; if anything needs to be filed (insurance stuff, etc) it gets filed in the file cabinet immediately and if there is anything that needs to be handled and I can't deal with it at the moment I lay it on the desk next to my mousepad because that lets me know I'm going to have to take care of it pretty soon.

I keep up with all of our money/bills/receipts with a program on my computer - Microsoft Money - so every other day I enter in the previous day's receipts and then file those receipts in the file cabinet. By using this program and keeping up with where our money is being spent on a daily basis it has helped with our taxes and in other issues that have come up.

Beachin' It

I love the beach! Doesn't that water behind me look so inviting?? I am so happy it's about time to start heading to the beach again. I really don't like to lay out. Dakota and I ride the waves and play in the water while Greg sits on the beach and "cooks". Right now it's too hot to just go to the beach and lay around because the water is still too cold to get in when I start getting hot (did that make any sense?)

Anyway there is no point to this post other than to say "Thank you Jesus for the sunshine and the beautiful beach! I do enjoy it!!"

Make it Yourself Mondays

Angie at Thrifty Florida Mama is hosting "Make it Yourself Monday" to help our budgets by becoming less dependent on fast food drive-thrus and convenience items at the store. My contribution this week (yeah, I know it's Tuesday and not Monday --I forgot about it yesterday) but my recipe for the week is actually one I got from another blogger, Monica at The Full Table. I got her recipe for homemade pizza crust a while back and have made this several times - my family loves it!! I use different vegetables, chicken, bacon - whatever toppings I have on hand.

Crust:
1 cup of warm water
1 package of active dry yeast
1 tsp. sugar
1 tsp. salt
2 2/12- 3 cups flour

Dissolve yeast in warm water. Add all other ingredients. Stir 20 times to mix. Let rise 20 minutes.

Sauce:
8 oz can tomato sauce
1 Tbsp. minced garlic
2 tsp. Italian spice blend

Spread dough thinly on large cookie sheet. Top with sauce, 3 cups mozzarella cheese, and additional toppings as desired. Our favorite is mushrooms and sausage.

Bake at 450 on lowest rack for 15 minutes or until cheese has melted.

Remember when I posted here about the HOT DEAL at Victoria's Secrets where you could purchase these great slippers on clearance 2 for $6.00 and then use a coupon code to get $5.00 off? I had a gift card at the time with a $10.00 balance so I used that to pay the $5.00 shipping/handling charge and my slippers came in yesterday!
